Peter Stewart continues his rise as one of the best contemporary painters of wild Africa. Peter Stew-art’s storyline begins with a narrative that’s familiar to most of us who credit our elders for getting us involved in hunting and fishing and igniting our passion for seeking out wild country.

“My son and I have recently started hunting together and are slowly working our way up the spe-cies ladder,” he told me as we chatted over WhatsApp, separated by nine time zones and about 8,400 nautical miles of distance. “I must say there is something special about spending time togeth-er stalking an animal or chatting round the fire. Some of our most enjoyable trips have been with a bunch of Dads and lads.”

While Stewart would characterize himself as being self-trained, having studied graphic design with-out attending an art school, his “God-given talent” has been aided and abetted mightily by the best kind of art education there is - thousands of hours of observing, drawing, experimenting and revis-ing paintings originating from forays into the bush.

Over the last two decades, Stewart has rapidly risen to be counted among the premier wildlife artists of his generation in the southern horn of Africa. Stewart is heralded especially for his portrayals of leopards and lions and lives just a day’s drive from Krueger National Park—South Africa’s Yellow-stone. —but dwells closer to Zululand, traditional tribal region of Kwa-Zulu Natal where he goes hunting with his kids.
