"Kwalata" is Donating a ONCE IN A LIFETIME OPPERTUNITY for an Educational/ Conservation experience like no other! The Elephant Bull to be darted, developed an abscess on his side and needed veterinary care. He was immobilised and treated and a collar was fitted to track his recovery and movements over a period of two years. He has recovered fully and it is time for the collar to be removed during which process the veterinarian will do a full analysis of his condition and give him several injections that form part of general care when these animals are immobilised. Measurements and blood samples will also be taken for research and data purposes.

The bull (affectionately referred to as Peanut) is 36 years of age and a successfully rewilded elephant. He was orphaned at 6 years of age during a culling operation in the Kruger National Park, together with 5 other orphans of similar age they were moved to Kaingo Game Reserve (Waterberg Wilderness) where they were taken care as free roaming elephant by Heidi Baer. At 20 years of age they benefitted from a dropping of fences between reserves and they came into contact with another herd of wild elephant and mature bulls.

The interaction with the wild elephant herd and mature bulls ensured a successful rewilding project. The original 6 animals have successfully bred and the total herd now numbers 16 animals with Peanut and his mate Tiny being the two mature bulls.

We are of the opinion that SCI members would relish the opportunity to be part of this process/exercise a once in a lifetime time opportunity to get close to and handle such a graceful animal a true hands-on conservation initiative funded by hunters' dollars.
