Description
“Mvua ya Kwanza” in Swahili means First Rains. A friend who has taken many safaris suggested this title and I thought is was perfect. November brings the first life giving rains and the land springs to life, a bright green carpet over the plains appears. My first concept was a lion with an impending storm brewing. The painting was missing something. When 2 zebra walked in, it was perfect.

About the Artist Denise Johanson (Shown in photo with the painting that John Rigby & Co. commissioned her to produce "The Rising Bite" and "The 416".

For many years, I have honed my skills in visual art. There were a few things that became my solid foundation in establishing myself. This includes the wildlife, my hometown, my family and mentors. The way to success was not easy, but throughout my life, I was able to seek company from art and the people I treasure the most.

My childhood revolved around my exploration into the 100 acres of land surrounding me. Playing on the mudflats of Puget Sound and being blessed with a loving family who encouraged arts and crafts. My youth was definitely a fun time in my life.

My father was a graduate of Masters of Science in Agronomy. With his passion and knowledge about the land, he diligently taught me about the plant kingdom. Both of my parents were avid scuba divers, so I was introduced to the wonders of the sea. I am thankful because my parents have taught me to have high work ethics, commitment, and the confidence to do anything.
